The Working Party includes ten community members, two Council representatives, and the Mayor as an ex-officio member. A Chairperson will be elected by the members at the first meeting of the Working Party.
The Working Party will operate as an advisory group. All formal decisions regarding the Obelisk will remain with the District Council of Robe.
Mayor Lisa Ruffell expressed enthusiasm about the newly appointed Working Party, stating, “I am thrilled to announce the members of the Robe Obelisk Working Party. Each of these individuals brings a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to our community. Their diverse backgrounds and skills will be instrumental in ensuring that our beloved Obelisk is preserved and celebrated for generations to come.”
The Mayor also emphasised the competitive nature of the nomination process, adding, “The selection process was highly competitive, reflecting the strong interest and dedication of our community. While we could not include everyone who applied, we are confident that the appointed members will work diligently to address the challenges and opportunities associated with the Robe Obelisk project.”
Our aim is to safeguard the Obelisk in some form, and if possible, preserve its role as a symbol of Robe’s rich history and cultural heritage, even as we explore relocation or other innovative solutions. With the collective experience and passion of this Working Party, I am confident that we will achieve positive outcomes that honour our town’s legacy.”
“I want to express my gratitude to all who nominated themselves for this important role. Your enthusiasm and willingness to contribute are deeply valued, and we hope to engage the broader community in this endeavour as we move forward.”
The Working Party will meet as needed and engage in informal discussions to generate ideas and solutions. They will follow a structured approach for recommendations and budget estimates, with stages for initial recommendations, detailed investigations, and funding/implementation. Findings and updates will be reported to the District Council of Robe, and the Terms of Reference will be reviewed periodically to ensure alignment with objectives and community needs.
