Becoming an Australian citizen is an important milestone. Citizenship information, including how to apply, preparing for the test, fees and application progress, is managed by the Department of Home Affairs.

Citizenship Ceremonies in Our Council
Once your application is approved, the Department of Home Affairs will notify Council through a Citizenship Ceremony Planning Report. Council will then contact you by phone and advise the date of the next available ceremony. A formal letter of invitation will also be sent to you.
Depending on the number of participants, ceremonies may be held in either the Council Chambers on Royal Circus (Principal Office) or in the Institute on Mundy Terrace.
What to Expect
- The Pledge: It is a legal requirement for most people to make the Australian Citizenship pledge of commitment. This is the final step in becoming an Australian Citizen
- Invitation: You will normally be invited to your ceremony around four weeks before the event. The invitation will confirm the date, time and location
- Guests: Your invitation will provide guidance on bringing guests
- Duration: Please allow around two hours for the ceremony, including registration, formalities, the pledge and presentations
- Certificate: After making the pledge, you will receive your Australian Citizenship Certificate, which is an important legal document and proof of citizenship
What to Bring to your Ceremony
- Your official invitation
- One form of photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence, passport, or official photo document)
- If you wish, a holy book for your pledge
