Following community feedback through the process of developing its Strategic Plan 2024-2028, the District Council of Robe has taken a pragmatic approach regarding the future of the historic Robe Obelisk.

Mayor Lisa Ruffell indicated that whilst the Council’s position isn’t formal, the views of our community have recently been discussed, with the conclusion that preserving the Obelisk in its current location is not responsible use of ratepayer funds.

“While we recognise its profound historical significance, various factors such as cost, environmental impact, practicality, and community opinion present significant challenges”, she said.

Not only does the obelisk play an integral role in community and business branding, but it also holds a special place in the hearts of our residents and visitors, and its legacy is deeply ingrained in our collective memory.

Mayor Ruffell acknowledged community input on this emotive topic, stating “significant efforts have been made over the years, and we appreciate the commitment to preserving the obelisk at its current location”.

However, whilst the Council is aware that the obelisk will at some stage be lost to the eroding coastline, given the unknown timeline of its demise, has formed an opinion that it should be the Council and community of the day to determine how it will be memorialised, rather than locking in any solution now that might differ overtime.

On this basis, she confirmed that the Obelisk has not specifically been mentioned in the Strategic Plan 2024-2028 which was formally adopted by Council recently. While preservation efforts will not be pursued, the Council remains committed to open community dialogue and consultation on the matter.
